Inhabited since ancient times, Oroklini is a former copper mining area on the outskirts of Larnaca’s urban sprawl. It’s now a popular beachside getaway destination that attracts international holidaymakers, as well as birdwatchers exploring the shores of Oroklini Lake.
Stretching along the seafront is a sandy beach where you can enjoy a refreshing swim in the waters of Larnaca Bay. If you want to spend the day relaxing, you can rent beach umbrellas and sun loungers in front of the Blue Wave restaurant. For those feeling more active, there’s also a beach volleyball court.
Hidden just behind the beach is Oroklini Lake, which has been designated as an Important Bird Area by BirdLife International. It provides a habitat for black-winged stilts and spur-winged lapwings, as well as more than 50 migratory species that pass through the area. Greater flamingos have also been spotted in its shallow waters.
Getting there
Oroklini is around 10 minutes’ drive from the centre of Larnaca and 15 minutes from Larnaca International Airport, which has flights to destinations across Europe and the Middle East. Regular buses connect to Oroklini and the village centre is compact enough to explore on foot.
