About Port Augusta

Known as the “Crossroads of Australia”, Port Augusta sits on the eastern coast of Spencer Gulf, serving as a gateway to the Flinders Ranges. The town has a heritage centre, museum and several eateries, while nearby lookouts provide spectacular views of the coast and gulf.

Head to Wadlata Outback Centre, which serves as a visitor centre and museum, providing interactive exhibits and information about the region’s history. Explore the Tunnel of Time to follow the movements of Aboriginals, early Europeans and miners who opened the Outback to transportation and communication. You’ll also learn about the wide range of animals populating the Outback of Central Australia.

At Homestead Park Pioneer Museum, you can explore an actual 130-year-old homestead with original log cabin and accompanying structures. It originally belonged to the Yudnapinna Homestead about 100 kilometres away. The museum also features railway and farming memorabilia and displays.

McLennan Lookout on Whiting Parade sits on the south-east edge of Port Augusta, providing a glimpse at massive power stations and the Spencer Gulf. For a more adventurous climb, head across the river to the old iron Water Tower Lookout for township vistas.
