About Christ Church Cathedral

Christ Church Cathedral is located on the high ground of the oldest area of Dublin, Ireland, serving as one of the finest historic buildings in the country. Christ Church Cathedral and St. Patrick’s Cathedral are the capital city’s only medieval cathedrals, the former being the eldest. This religious site serves as an equally appealing architectural tourist attraction with physical representations spanning many historic ages.

The highlighting features of the cathedral include the Romanesque portal situated within the transept, arched ceilings of the impressive nave and the Victorian choir screen. The most reputed exhibition is the tomb of Strongbow contained by the south aisle of the nave. Additionally, the heart of the St. Lawrence O’Toole presides in the centre of the chapel of his own name. Other things to see include the Chancel, dark crypt and a covered bridge connecting to Synod Hall.

Transportation to Christ Church Cathedral is serviced by many bus routes. Trains route to the nearby stations of Heuston and Connolly of which it is a 20-minute walk to the church. The Tara Dart Station is a 10-minute walk away, and the Luas Red Line routes to the nearest Four Courts stop.

The history of the cathedral is rooted in the early 1000s from which it passed through many restorations throughout the Norman and Reformation periods into the 19th and 20th centuries. The modern structure was rebuilt by George Edmund Street in the 1870s.
