About Porto Santo

Porto Santo is a laid-back island fringed by gold-sand beaches and volcanic reefs. At 11 kilometres long and 6 kilometres wide, it’s one of the smallest islands in the Madeira archipelago. Explore the historic capital and learn about the connection to Christopher Columbus or simply relax on the postcard-perfect beach.

Things to do in Porto Santo

A long stretch of honey-hued sand has earned Porto Santo a nickname as the “Golden Island”. The sand is made up of tiny grains of coral and is rich in calcium, magnesium and iodine. Locals believe the sand has curative powers and can be used to treat rheumatism, arthritis and bone diseases. Warm water, vibrant marine life and offshore wrecks make scuba diving in Porto Santo world-class.

Vila Baleira is the bustling capital and a great base to explore the island. The city is built around a sunny square framed by whitewashed buildings. Lush palm trees and hot-pink bougainvillea flowers add a splash of colour. Christopher Columbus House Museum occupies the former home of the famous Italian explorer. Inside, you can learn about the legacy of Columbus and his Atlantic voyages.

Restaurants serve local island specialties like “bolo do caco” flatbread slathered with garlic butter and cooked on a basalt stone slab. Walk down to the waterfront to dine al fresco. Happy hour calls for “poncha” cocktails made with sugar cane brandy, honey and orange juice.

A steep trail winds up to the summit of Ana Ferreira. As you climb the peak, you’ll notice unique pentagon-shaped rock columns formed by volcanic activity. Pico do Facho is the highest point on the island and was once used to spot pirates. At more than 500 metres above sea level, you’ll unlock sweeping views over the island.
