Spreading across 415 square kilometres at 2,500 metres above sea level, Alishan National Scenic Area is one of Taiwan’s most glorious natural areas. Pristine waterfalls tumble in deep mountain forests dotted with high-altitude tea plantations and historic temples. Hiking trails criss-cross Alishan, offering plenty of outdoor adventures for all fitness levels.
Don’t miss Shoujhen Temple, the highest-elevation temple in Taiwan. Head to the second floor to see 10,000 miniature Buddhas. Food stalls line the temple and you can hike through groves of sacred trees to find peaceful picnic spots.
You can explore four small villages in Alishan, including Fenqihu, which sits at an elevation of 1,400 metres. The village is noted for its natural rock formations and wood-carved homes built into the mountainside. Pick up some high-altitude products, such as aiyu jelly made from fruit seeds of awkeotsang figs.
Getting there
Alishan National Scenic Area lies within Chiayi County. Direct buses depart from Chiayi TRA Station and a three-hour scenic journey is available on the Alishan Forest Railway. The train stops at Fenqihu village, one-hour bus ride from Alishan.
