Where to stay in Bakewell

About Bakewell

Located in the heart of the Peak District on River Wye, Bakewell is a launching point for visiting the White Peak limestone dales. This traditional market town is known for its food, produce, breweries and the creation of the Bakewell Pudding in 1820.

Things to do

Sample Bakewell’s famous Bakewell Pudding, a delectable pastry shell packed with frangipane and jam, at one of the original creators. Pick up a pudding to go at Bloomers or visit the tea room at Old Original Bakewell Pudding Shop to have it served on tiered trays.

Walk through town to admire ancient stone buildings and courtyards as well as the picturesque five-arched stone bridge. You’ll find shops selling everything from handcrafted chocolates to rare spirits and outdoor adventure gear. Sample craft beers along the riverside on a tasting tour at Thornbridge Brewery.

Stroll the ornamental gardens and lavish interiors of Chatsworth House, also known as “Palace of the Peak”. Explore the traditional home of Devonshire royalty to see its staterooms, paintings, murals and period decor. Travelling with little ones? They’ll have a blast at the farmyard adventure play area.

Don’t miss seeing All Saints Church’s 14th-century fort, heraldic tombs and Norman arches. In the evening, book a table at Michelin-starred Fischer’s Baslow House dining room to try British specialties, such as Yorkshire game and Cornish crab.

Getting around

Traffic-free bicycle routes run throughout Bakewell, while buses and taxis are also available. Rental cars can be picked up at Manchester Airport, about 43 kilometres away.
