Strung out along the heavenly Italian Riviera coastline, Cinque Terre comprises five ethereal fishing villages with colourful buildings, verdant vineyards and historic terraces tracing steep cliff faces towards the Ligurian Sea. The Heritage-listed Cinque Terre dates back to the 11th century, but has recently found worldwide fame with its photographic landscapes and rich Italian history and culture.
Cinque Terre envelopes you with its coastal landscapes and peaceful ambience, thanks to its ban on cars. A 19th-century railroad connects the five towns, which offer cobblestoned streets leading to centuries-old churches, family-run eateries and secluded beaches. Overlooking Corniglia and Vernazza, Cinque Terre National Park offers classic views of the vibrant fishing villages and cocktail-blue ocean.
Looking for some beach time? You can choose between Guvano Beach, Vernazza Beach, Corniglia Beach and Riomaggiore Beach, which all offer crystal-clear water overlooked by dramatic cliffs. History lovers can also tick off some of the coastline’s old fortifications, such as Doria Castle and Castello di Riomaggiore.
Getting there
Cinque Terre starts with Bonassola in the north or La Spezia in the south. Bonassola is about two hours from Genoa via the REG and IC trains, while La Spezia is 2.5 hours from Florence using the RV, IC and REG trains. Fly into Genoa Cristoforo Colombo Airport or Florence Airport.
