Perched above the southernmost point of Taiwan, the Eluanbi Lighthouse has been nicknamed the “Light of East Asia” due to the intensity of its beam. It overlooks the Luzon Strait and offers magnificent views across the coast and surrounding Kenting National Park.
Visit the small museum detailing the history of the Eluanbi Lighthouse, which was constructed in 1883 following frequent shipwrecks caused by hidden reefs and strong typhoons. Learn about the damage it suffered during the First Sino-Japanese War and World War II, as well as the trench that was built around the lighthouse following raids by indigenous tribes.
Want to stretch your legs? Stroll around the fortified lighthouse to soak up the sweeping ocean views or enjoy a picnic on the surrounding grassy lawns. Hiking trails also lead down the hill from Eluanbi Lighthouse to the coast, which is renowned for its immense coral rocks.
Getting there
Eluanbi Lighthouse is around 15 minutes’ drive from Kenting and 30 minutes from Hengchun Airport, which has regular flights from Taipei. Kaohsiung International Airport is around two hours’ drive from the lighthouse.
