About Golden Gate Bridge

Celebrated as one of the "Seven Wonders of the Modern World", the Golden Gate Bridge spans the Golden Gate Strait between the city of San Francisco and the Marin headlands. Easily recognised by its iconic orange coloration, the bridge can be visited by car, bicycle, sightseeing bus or on foot.

Before the bridge was built, the Golden Gate Strait between San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean could only be crossed using the ferry service which had been in operation since 1820. The bright orange vermillion colour, known as "international orange" was selected for its clear visibility for passing ships under San Francisco’s fog, and it’s this scene that is still the most iconic of the Golden Gate Bridge today. It was designed with walkways on either side of its six traffic lanes, with the main eastern walkway open to both pedestrians and cyclists. The Bridge Pavilion is located on the San Francisco side of the bridge and functions as a visitor’s centre, with exhibitions about the bridge’s history, as well as a gift shop and cafe overlooking this quintessential San Franciscan scene. The Marin Headlands just north of the bridge provide outstanding photo opportunities on the other side, taking in the Golden Gate Bridge with the San Francisco city skyline in the background.

The Golden Gate Bridge is connected to downtown San Francisco along the Golden Gate Transit services, as well as being a regular stop on the Big Bus Tours and City Sightseeing double decker hop-on-hop-off bus services. There is a designated pedestrian path for those wanting to walk across the bridge and take in the views, or bicycles can be rented to cycle over.

The Golden Gate Bridge was initially dubbed "the bridge that couldn’t be built" and came up against intense opposition during the ten years of planning that led to its opening in 1937. A multi-million dollar project, it took four years to build and cost the lives of 11 workers during its construction.
