Where to stay in Grömitz

About Grömitz

Established as a sea resort in the early 19th century, Grömitz overlooks the Bay of Lübeck in Germany’s far north. It’s fringed by a long stretch of sand that attracts beachgoers during the summer months and is on the doorstep of historic Cismar and its medieval monastery.

Things to do in Grömitz

In the heart of Grömitz is the Kurpark, a leafy recreational space that centres around a duck-filled pond and sprawling lawns. Challenge your family and friends on the boules court and get active on the multi-generational playground or stretch your legs on one of the tree-lined walking trails. The Kurpark is just a stone’s throw from the eight-kilometre-long beach that stretches the entire length of Grömitz and is the ideal place to spend long summer days.

Travelling with kids? Don’t miss a visit to the Zoo Arche Noah, a small wildlife centre that’s home to animals from around the globe. Come face-to-face with African lions, playful chimpanzees and European lynxes or get hands-on at the petting zoo. The zoo also features a children’s playground where young visitors can let off some steam and a restaurant serving German favourites.

A short drive north of Grömitz is the Cismar Abbey, a former Benedictine monastery that was originally constructed in the 13th century. It now hosts rotating art exhibitions and live music concerts, with a highlight of the abbey being its beautifully carved altar. After admiring the Gothic architecture, you can follow one of the walking trails that lead from the Cismar Abbey to the Baltic Sea.

Getting around Grömitz

Grömitz is around 45 minutes drive from Lübeck and Lübeck Airport and Hamburg Airport is 1.5 hours away. Buses travel throughout Grömitz and connect to Cismar while the town centre is compact enough to explore on foot.
