Carved by the Hallingdal River, this scenic valley is an outdoor lover’s playground, with everything from hiking to mountain biking and skiing on offer. It encompasses several traditional villages and sparkling lakes known for their trout fishing.
Soak up the valley views on one of Hallingdal’s scenic hiking trails or get your adrenalin pumping while mountain biking on the thrilling single tracks. Anglers can lure trout in the Hallingdal River or cast a fishing line in one of the dozens of lakes that dot the region. In the winter months, there are several family-friendly alpine ski resorts, as well as hundreds of kilometres of groomed cross-country skiing trails to explore.
Want to meet some of the local wildlife? Head to Bear Park in the village of Flå where you can come face-to-face with bears, elks and lynx. It also boasts the largest crocodile exhibition in Norway, plus an obstacle course, a zip-line and a children’s playground.
Getting there
Hallingdal is around 2.5 hours’ drive from Oslo and Oslo Airport while Bergen is nearly five hours away. Buses connect villages throughout the valley, but having your own vehicle gives you greater freedom to explore.
