Encompassing several tiny islands off the coast of Austvågøy, Henningsvær is a traditional fishing village in Norway’s Lofoten Islands. Since the advent of drone photography, it’s become famed for its soccer field, while it’s also a popular destination for rock climbing and scuba diving.
You can appreciate the natural beauty of the Lofoten Islands at the Galleri Lofotens Hus, a waterfront museum that exhibits paintings and photography from throughout the archipelago. Also worth a visit is the Kaviar Factory, a former warehouse that’s been transformed into a contemporary art museum boasting spectacular views towards Vesterøyan.
Browse the vintage fishing equipment and boats on display at the Heimgårdsbrygga, then stroll to one of the nearby cafes. A must-try specialty of the Lofoten Islands is locally-sourced stockfish, which is served in many of Henningsvær’s restaurants. For a sauna with a view, visit the former cod liver oil factory of Trevarefabrikken.
Getting there
The Lofoten Islands can be reached by flights to Leknes Airport and Svolvær Airport or by the ferry that connects to Bodø. Buses travel throughout the archipelago but having your own vehicle is the best way of accessing Henningsvær and exploring the region.
