Set on a trio of islands, Frederiksborg Slot is one of the most spectacular buildings in Denmark. The Renaissance castle dates back to the 17th century and encircled by a storybook moat. Stroll around the enormous central courtyards and get lost in the magnificent Baroque gardens. The adorable Frederiksborg Ferry sails around the main lake and treats you to postcard-perfect views of the castle.

Within the castle, the Museum of National History showcases antiques, oil paintings and tapestries. Admire intricate ceiling carvings in the “Riddershalen” grand ballroom and don’t miss the stunning “Slotskirken” royal chapel, where Danish kings and queens were once crowned.

Discover more than 500 years of local history at the Hillerod Town Museum. From antique printing presses and to taxidermy animals, the museum features several floors of engaging exhibits. A recreated 19th-century street complete with red-brick shops, workshops and a schoolhouse, is a highlight.

Explore sun-dappled trails in Gribskov, one of the largest forests in Denmark. Part of Kongernes Nordsjælland National Park, the forest protects more than 5,500 hectares of woodland. Spot four species of deer, as well as birds like goldeneyes, great cormorants and red-backed shrikes. The forest has a magical feel and is mentioned in old folk stories and fairy tales.
