Things to do in Itirapina

The charming town centre is the beating heart of Itirapina. Stroll along cobbled streets lined with colonial-style buildings and relax in leafy parks. The main square is a focal point and framed by cafes where you can enjoy freshly brewed Brazilian coffee and “pao de queijo” cheese bread.

You don’t need to venture far to find beautiful landscapes in Itirapina. The trail up Morro do Fogão rewards you with sweeping views over the surrounding hills and countryside. At 1100 metres, it’s one of the tallest peaks in the Serra de Itaqueri. Set your alarm and start early to catch a fiery sunrise from the summit.

Reconnect with nature in Saltão - Parque de Ecoturismo. Trails wind through the park and lead to natural swimming pools set at the foot of cascading waterfalls. Cachoeira Saltão is one of the largest and plunges 75 metres down a rocky cliff covered with lush greenery. Enjoy a picnic on the rocks and swim in the cool water. Cachoeira Monjolinho is smaller but just as beautiful and features multiple cascades.

From “lanchonete” snack bars to Brazilian steakhouses, there are plenty of places to enjoy local cuisine in Itirapina. Start your day with “pão na chapa” fresh-baked bread slathered with butter. Hearty dishes like “feijoada” black bean stew and “virado a paulista” plates loaded with rice, pork, kale, plantain, sausages and egg are favourites in São Paulo. Street stalls sell snacks like “pastel” pastries stuffed with cod and “coxinha” deep-fried balls filled with cheese and shredded chicken.

Getting around Itirapina

Itirapina is pedestrian-friendly and easy to get around on foot, though you’ll need a car to explore surrounding sights and attractions at your own pace. Taxis are an easy alternative to a car. The town is a three-hour drive from São Paulo and São Paulo/Guarulhos International Airport.
