About Koforidua

Koforidua is a bustling city and gateway to the Densu River Basin. Walking around the city, you’ll see a mix of colonial and contemporary architecture. Shop at the colourful bead market, try authentic Ghanaian chocolate and hike to a picturesque waterfall.

Things to do in Koforidua

Koforidua is surrounded by cacao plantations that produce some of the best single-origin beans in the world. You’ll see handmade chocolate sold at shops and street stalls across Koforidua. Instead of milk and cream, traditional chocolate is made with just two ingredients – cacao beans and sugar. This gives the chocolate a rich, nutty flavour and unique gritty texture.

Shop for treasures at the weekly Thursday bead market. Vendors from across the Eastern Region descend on the market to sell colourful beads and jewellery. In addition to beads, you’ll see wood carvings, hand-stitched leather goods and other trinkets. It’s a great place to shop for one-of-a-kind souvenirs and experience Ghana through a local lens.

Follow the jungle-covered trail to Boti Waterfalls. The twin falls are fed by a pair of rivers, which come together to form the cascade. Look for the shimmering rainbow at the base of the falls. Enjoy a picnic on the rocks and don’t forget your swimsuit if you want to swim. From the falls, you can hike to Umbrella Rock, an impressive formation that seems to defy gravity. Climb the wooden ladder to the flat-topped rock for a bird’s eye view over the forest.
