Heavily influenced by both Serbia and Albania, the communities have experienced conflict in the past but now live peacefully side-by-side.

Things to do in Mitrovica

Strolling around the city centre, you’ll be tempted by family-owned restaurants serving traditional Kosovan cuisine. Local specialties include peppers stuffed with meat, rice and vegetables, lamb sausages topped with sour cream and hearty cabbage rolls. The Sitnica River flows past Kosovska Mitrovica and is a great place to walk off your meal and enjoy some fresh air.

Perched on a hilltop overlooking the city, Saint Demetrius Serbian Orthodox Church will charm you with its beautiful frescoes. In the city centre, Xhamia e Zallit Mosque represents the city’s Muslim community. It’s built in the lavish Ottoman style and features soaring domes and minarets.

The imposing Miner’s Monument dominates the Kosovska Mitrovica skyline. Built in the Soviet era, the monument resembles a giant mining cart and honours the Albanian and Serbian workers who lost their lives during World War II.

A short drive out of the city, Banjska Monastery is set at the foot of Mount Tara. The monastery dates back to the 1300s and was founded by a Serbian king. Today you can wander around the national historic monument and enjoy the rural scenery.
