About Lynmouth

Straddling the junction of the West Lyn and East Lyn rivers, Lynmouth is a picturesque Devon village and the gateway to Exmoor National Park. It is nestled below the town of Lynton, to which it is connected by a water-powered funicular railway that has been in continuous use since 1890.

Browse the shops selling local handicrafts and leather goods that line Lynmouth Street or grab a bite to eat at one of the cafes. Opposite Lynmouth Harbour is a memorial dedicated to the 1952 Lynmouth flood, with its displays including personal accounts, old photographs and a model of the village before the disaster.

No visit to Lynmouth is complete without riding the Lynton and Lynmouth Cliff Railway, which was designed to transport goods between the two settlements. It rises over 152 metres across its 262-metre-long track, making it the highest and steepest water-powered railway in the world.

Getting there

Lynmouth is around 30 minutes’ drive from Barnstaple and two hours from Bristol Airport, which has flights to destinations across Europe and North Africa. Buses are the main means of getting to Lynmouth and the village is small enough to explore on foot.
