About Messolonghi

Stroll around the Garden of the Heroes and pay your respects to the soldiers who lost their lives during the brutal Exodus of Messolonghi in 1826. The exodus saw thousands of residents flee the town after surviving almost a year of besiegement by the Ottoman Empire. The garden is set behind the Gate of Exodus and anchored by a statue of Lord Byron, a passionate supporter of Greek independence.

Learn about the legacy of the beloved English poet Lord Byron at the Museum of History & Art. The museum is housed in a handsome Neoclassical mansion overlooking the main square and features exhibits on the famous Romantic, who died in Messolongi in the 1820s. Upstairs exhibits cover topics like the Greek War of Independence.

Messolonghi is set on the shores of Klisova Lagoon, one of the largest saltwater wetlands in Greece. Dozens of species descend on the lake during the winter migration. Wooden huts called “pelades” dot the shoreline and offer an excellent vantage point for spotting birds like the endangered Dalmatian pelican.

Cafes spill onto the lively main square and serve strong Greek coffee brewed in traditional “ibrik” pots. You’ll also see atmospheric tavernas with chalkboard menus and blue-and-white chequered tablecloths. Order local dishes like “papoutsakia” stuffed eggplant and “soutzoukakia” Greek meatballs.
