Things to do in Michelstadt

From narrow alleys lined with half-timbered houses to sunny courtyards anchored by bubbling fountains, there are hidden gems galore in the Michelstadt Old Town. Browse boutiques and galleries run by local artisans and shop for fresh produce at the weekly market. Cafes and bistros spill into the streets and serve local specialties like pork schnitzels topped with a green herb sauce and “nordhessische ahle wurscht” raw pork sausages. Coffee often comes with a bite-sized “bethmännchen” marzipan cookie.

The Gothic-style Town Hall towers over Michelstadt and is a local landmark. It’s known as the Rathaus and is set on the picturesque main square. Enormous oak beams support the half-timbered structure, which dates back to the 15th century and is topped with a trio of turrets.

Einhardsbasilika showcases the incredible craftsmanship of 9th-century builders. The church is one of the finest examples of Carolingian architecture in Germany and features incredible masonry. Inside you can see traces of centuries-old frescoes.

Schloss Fürstenau looks like a scene from a German storybook. Encircled by a water-filled moat, the castle combines a variety of architectural styles, including Gothic, Renaissance and Neoclassical. The interior isn’t open to the public, however, you’re welcome to stroll around the courtyard and landscaped gardens.

Enjoy a leisurely walk in Eulbacher Park. Inspired by English parklands, the park was once a hunting ground for German counts. Trails wind through the 400-hectare park and take you past enclosures where you can see European bison, red deer and boars.
