About Muan

Overlooking the islands that scatter to Korea’s south-west, Muan is a laid-back town renowned for its white lotus flowers. It’s home to Ramsar-listed mudflats and is near the Jeungdo salt fields and maritime city of Mokpo.

Things to do in Muan

Muan is renowned for its ecologically-important mudflats that have been identified by Ramsar for their threatened status. Join one of the informative tours run by the Muan Ecological Tidal Flat Center, with free time to explore the natural landscapes and spot scuttling mud crabs.

Muan is also a good base for visiting the Taepyeong Salt Farm on the nearby island of Jeungdo, which is the largest producer of sun-dried salt in South Korea. Follow the wooden trail that leads through the salt fields, visit the museum to learn how salt is produced and participate in a range of hands-on salt experiences.

Spot rare white lotuses at White Lotus Pond of Hoesan, the largest habitat for these flowers in Asia. Visit the Aquatic Plants Natural Education Site to learn more about their unique ecology, then stroll across the bridges or ride one of the “duck boats” across the watery landscape.

Make a day trip from Muan to the lively city of Mokpo, renowned for its Wholesale Fish Market where you can sample the local specialty, hongeo (skate). Follow one of the hiking trails that lead up the slopes of Yudalsan Mountain or discover the folk legends associated with the tiny neighbouring island of Samhakdo.

Muan is located just over one hour’s train ride from Muan International Airport and the same distance from Mokpo. Buses connect with surrounding towns and villages and to the salt farm on Jeungdo.
