About Playa de Santiago

A quaint fishing village on the south side of La Gomera Island, Playa de Santiago is bordered by volcanic cliffs and the North Atlantic Ocean. The subtropical forests of Garajonay National Park are nearby, while Playa de Santiago has plenty of beaches, scuba diving sites and seafront dining.

Things to do

Along the waterfront, authentic Canarian cafes serve regional cuisine on verandas and rooftop gardens boasting sea views. If you want to sample the local delicacies, dine on the carnede cabra en salsa with goat and wine sauce or try freshly-caught lobster with paella. Wrap up your evening with local Garajonay white wine and live music in one of the laid-back bars.

Want to enjoy the outdoors? Visit Valle Gran Reye and Playa de la Cueva to see black-sand beaches framed by calm turquoise waters. Book a catamaran trip departing from the jetty or go scuba diving to see octopus, spider crabs and barracudas.

Spend a day hiking in Garajonay National Park, starting at the village of Igualero, about 25 minutes’ drive away. Climb past forested canopies and freshwater streams on the way to the summit of Alto de Garajonay to capture expansive views of Mount Teide.

Drive 30 minutes from Playa de Santiago to the capital city of San Sebastian to visit La Asuncion church in the main square, where Christopher Columbus stopped before his voyage to the New World. The house where he slept is now a museum honouring the explorer. For souvenirs, pick up some Miel de Palma honey in Arure or woven linens in Hermigua.

Playa de Santiago is pedestrian-friendly and buses offer transportation on the island. You can also use taxis, minibuses or a rental car to get around San Sebastian.
