About Poros

Separated from the Peloponnese by a canal, Poros lies in the Saronic Gulf and is a popular weekend getaway destination for Athenian city dwellers. It comprises the main island of Kalaureia and volcanic Sphaeria where Poros Town is located. Pine-covered hills dominate the island’s interior while blissful beaches fringe the coastline.

Things to do in Poros

Cascading down a hill on the south coast of the island is Poros Town, which is clustered with Neoclassical buildings and fringed by a breezy promenade. Stroll along the waterfront while enjoying stunning views of the rugged Peloponnese or watch the yachts coming and going from the harbour. Hidden just inland is a network of winding lanes lined with tavernas and boutiques.

If you’re interested in the island’s ancient past, pay a visit to the Archaeological Museum of Poros, which houses findings dating from the Mycenaean Period to Roman times. Get up close to figurines discovered in Galatas tombs and votive bronze vessels, as well as Ionic column capitals from the 6th-century-BC Temple of Poseidon.

Built amidst a pine forest to the east of Poros Town is the Holy Monastery of Zoodochos Pigi, which was founded in 1720 and later provided refuge for monks from Mount Athos. Admire its dome-topped basilica and towering belfry, then stroll down to the tranquil sands of Monastery Beach. Sun loungers and beach umbrellas are available for rent and there’s a small kiosk where you can grab refreshments.

Getting around Poros

Poros is around an hour by ferry from the Athenian port of Piraeus while Athens International Airport is 3.5 hours’ drive away. Buses connect from Poros Town to destinations around the island and private taxis are readily available for getting around. Poros Town can easily be explored on foot.
