About Les Portes du Soleil

Portes du Soleil is one of the largest ski areas in the world and contains more than thirteen resorts within the expanse of both the French and Swiss Alps, extending between Mont Blanc in France and Lake Geneva in Switzerland. The location boasts more than 600 kilometres of pistes across fourteen valleys and a distinctive variety of local villages accommodating large tourist resorts, making for one of the most popular skiing destinations on the globe.

The ski area offers nearly 200 ski lifts, seven freestyle parks, many backcountry areas and various dining and nightlife opportunities. Morzine and Chatel are the largest traditional towns, the Avoriaz village provides a family oriented environment, and the Prodains village offers some of the longest, most adventurous pistes in the region. Cuisine options range from affordable burger joints to traditional Champéry’s restaurants as well as the renowned Pierre Chauds.

Portes du Soleil is located an hour outside of the Geneva International Airport and is within easy driving range of multiple major European cities. The nearest connection roadways include the A40 in France and the A9 in Switzerland. Railway access is possible from either country with stops at the Thonon-les-Bains, Cluses in France and Lausanne, Montreux and Aigle in Switzerland. There are a wealth of buses and shuttles that transport passengers directly into the ski area.

Although the Portes du Soleil is situated at a lower elevation than most resorts in the Alps, a unique microclimate persisting between the two valleys attributes to enough substantial snowfall to ensure the resort’s operation throughout five months of the year.
