Things to do in Florence

With its art-filled galleries, opulent villas and quintessential Tuscan countryside, the Province of Florence is sure to leave you speechless.

Sightsee in Florence. Serving as the capital of Tuscany, Florence is a riverfront city synonymous with Renaissance architecture and art. Marvel at the monumental Duomo with its red-and-white marble polychrome design and soak up the panoramic city views from Giotto’s Campanile. Art enthusiasts will find no shortage of inspiration at the Galleria dell’Accademia (home to Michelangelo’s “David”), while the likes of Titian, Rubens and Caravaggio are represented within the Palazzo Pitti.

Cycle the Seven Bridges Road. Serving as the main means of transportation in the area until the 13th century, this ancient route extends for almost 50 kilometres between Reggello and Arezzo. It offers magnificent views across the Arno River Valley while taking in Neolithic, Etruscan and Roman ruins. Admire the Masaccio triptych within the Church of San Pietro in Cascia and photograph the Balze of Valdarno, a series of pinnacle-like rocks that are said to have inspired Leonardo da Vinci.

Visit the Medici Villas and Gardens. Collectively designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, these 27 properties were owned by the powerful Medici family during the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries. On the northern outskirts of Florence are the remains of Villa Demidoff with its giant statue of the “Apennine Colossus”, while to the west lies the architecturally impressive Medici Villa of Poggio a Caiano. Explore its fresco-adorned rooms and visit the Museum of Still Life on the second floor.
