About Soria

With the Douro River flowing through its heart, the Province of Soria lies north-east of Madrid and encompasses part of the mountainous Sistema Ibérico region. It centres around the historically rich city of Soria and the archaeological remains of Numancia and boasts several natural recreational areas.

Things to

From the medieval streets of Soria to the cave paintings of Monte Valonsadero, the Province of Soria has something for everyone.

Explore Soria. Positioned on the left bank of the Douro River, Soria is an enchanting medieval city renowned for its Romanesque architecture. Browse the ancient artefacts and ceramics on display at the Museo Numantino and admire the ornate portico of the 12th-century Church of Santo Domingo, then relax amidst the lush greenery of Alameda de Cervantes.

Visit the Monastery of San Juan de Duero. Just across the Douro River from Soria is this Romanesque-monastery, which was used by the Knights Hospitaller of Jerusalem from the 12th century. Marvel at its early Gothic arcades and Mudéjar architectural elements before stepping inside the church where objects from Jewish, Islamic and Christian cultures are displayed.

Tour the Archaeological Site of Numancia. A short drive north of Soria will take you to the fascinating archaeological site of Numancia, which was first settled in the Chalcolithic period. Wander through its excavated necropolis and visit the reconstructed Celtiberian and Roman houses while learning about the red clay ceramics that have been uncovered here.

Hit the trails of Monte Valonsadero. Sprawling across almost 2,800 hectares, this nature reserve encompasses forests, meadows and plains north-west of Soria. It’s dotted with impressive rock features and home to cave paintings that can be accessed along its network of hiking trails.

Getting around Soria

Soria is around 2.5 hours’ drive from Madrid and just two hours from Madrid-Barajas Adolfo Suárez Airport. Regular trains connect to the Soria Cañuelo railway station and travel to towns throughout Soria Province. Having your own vehicle gives you greater freedom to explore the region.
