About Sagres

Sagres is a remote clifftop village that feels a world’s away from resorts like Faro, Lagos and Portimão. It’s perched on the tip of the Algarve and commands spectacular views over the Atlantic Ocean. Sunbathe on golden sand beaches, learn to surf and enjoy some of the freshest seafood in Portugal.

Things to do in Sagres

Like the rest of the Algarve, Sagres is blessed with gorgeous beaches. Praia da Mareta is one of the most popular and features a long strip of golden sand, with plenty of cafes, bars and restaurants within walking distance. Sheltered Praia da Baleeira is a great option for windy days while uncrowded Praia do Martinhal is favoured by locals. Rolling waves make Praia do Tonel a top pick for surfers.

Birders flock to Sagres to spot white storks nesting in the rugged cliff faces that surround the village. It’s one of the only places in the world where you can see the spectacle. Sagres is also a haven for rare birds like spotted eagles and red-footed falcons.

Spectacularly placed Cabo de São Vicente has an end-of-the-world feel. The rugged cape is the most south-westerly point of Europe and is crowned with a picturesque lighthouse. Take in the breathtaking views and look for humpbacks, sperm whales and orcas breaching offshore.

Sagres swaps upmarket establishments for family-run guesthouses and rustic restaurants. Local seafood features heavily on most menus and couldn’t be fresher. Dine at local “tascas” and order specialities like “cataplana de marisco” seafood stew and “conquilhas à Algarvia” clams. Pair your meal with a bottle of red from one of the Algarve’s four DOC winemaking regions.

Getting around Sagres

Sagres is compact and easy to get around on foot. Rental cars offer the freedom to visit Sagres and explore surrounding beaches and landmarks at your own pace. Local buses run between Lagos and Sagres in around one hour. Faro International Airport is a 1.5-hour drive away.
