One of the most popular zoos in the Baltics, the Tallinn Zoo was opened to the public in 1939 and now houses more than 500 different species. It boasts the largest collection of mountain goats and sheep in the world and is renowned for its resident owls, vultures and eagles.
Get up close to African elephants and pygmy hippos at the Elephant House, then come face-to-face with ibex and snow leopards at the Alpinarium. The Middle-Asia Complex is home to charismatic Bactrian camels and Przewalski’s horses, while marmosets, chimpanzees and crocodiles can be found in the Tropic House.
See the vultures and eagles in action at Hawk Mountain, then learn about the Tallinn Zoo’s research into endangered European mink and Amur leopards. The zoo also features a newly-built Polarium, where polar bears can be seen, and there’s a dedicated Children’s Zoo where young visitors can get hands-on with friendly animals.
Getting there
The Tallinn Zoo is located in Veskimetsa Park, around 10 minutes’ drive from the city centre. Public buses stop near the entrance to the zoo, while Tallinn Airport is a 20-minute drive away.
