About Tolmin

Tolmin is a picturesque town set at the junction of two crystalline rivers. The rugged Julian Alps tower in the distance and create a spectacular backdrop. Explore the fairytale gorges of the Soča Valley, visit a picturesque lakeside village and enjoy mouth-watering Slovenian cuisine.

Things to do in Tolmin

Follow the circular trail through Tolmin Gorge National Park and discover a pair of ancient canyons framed by moss-covered rocks. Traverse stone staircases carved into the canyon walls and get a bird’s eye view of the Tolminka River as you cross Devil’s Bridge. Tiny particles of limestone are suspended in the water and reflect sunlight. This is what gives the river its dazzling blue-green hue. Don’t miss the turnoff to Bear’s Head, an enormous rock wedged between the gorge walls.

Enjoy sweeping valley views from the Memorial Church of the Holy Spirit. Built from stone and wood in the early 20th century, the church pays tribute to soldiers who lost their lives in World War I. The interior features paintings by famous Austrian symbolist Remigius Geyling.

Spend the day in Most na Soči, a picturesque village set on a turquoise lake. Forest-covered hills and emerald-green fields slope down to the shoreline. Kayak, rowboat and stand-up paddleboard rentals are a great way to explore the lake and soak in the magnificent views.

Work up an appetite with outdoor adventures, then refuel with delicious Slovenian dishes like buckwheat dumplings stuffed with potato, cheese and pork. Freshly caught river trout is a specialty in the Soča Valley. Save room for a slice of “kremna rezina” cake featuring layers of puff pastry, cream and custard.
