An artsy scene encompassed by undulating rows of rice paddies and emerald forests, Ubud is the cultural heart of Bali. This scenic town is comprised of 14 different villages and is dotted with impressive rock-cut Hindu temples and shrines.

Things to do

Ubud is home to many sacred temples, highlighted by the Saraswati Temple enacted to honour the goddess of learning, literature and art. Here you can sit beside a pond teeming with lotus blossoms and soak in the soothing ambience of your surroundings. For a dose of history, take the time to explore the Padmasana shrine and the statues of the Goddess Saraswati.

If you’re looking for adventure, the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary is a must-see. This beautiful expanse of jungle contains three temples and over 600 Balinese macaques that will happily approach you. Locals discourage feeding them, but you’re welcome to observe them to your heart’s desire.

The Neka Museum contains the most substantial art collection in all of Bali, encompassing high-quality, diverse exhibitions. Here you can explore a gallery of Arie Smit’s works featured on the upper level and works by master I Gusti Nyoman Lempad displayed down in the Lempad Pavilion. There are also temporary exhibits and a black and white photography archive available for viewing.

Before you leave Bali be sure to stop by the Agung Rai Museum of Art, a modern juxtaposition to the historic Neka Museum. You can enjoy a free tea or coffee while you stroll around the gallery and the beautiful garden is a compliment to the museum, so be sure to meander around the grounds outside.

Getting around

You can hire a tourist or shuttle bus that routes directly from the Ngurah Rai International Airport, but once you’re in town, bemos are your best way of getting around. Hire a driver at the junction of Jl Monkey Forest and Jl Raya Ubud, or rent a motorbike if you prefer to see the area on two wheels. Lease an ATV for an exciting change of pace and adventure through the surrounding forests.
