Stretching from the Jotunheimen Mountains in the north to the Gol Ridge in the south, Valdres is a spectacular valley that lies partway between Oslo and Bergen. This historically agricultural region has flourished in recent years as a tourism destination, with an abundance of outdoor activities that include hiking, fishing and cross-country skiing.
Stretch your legs on one of the picturesque hiking trails that meander through Valdres or tackle one of Norway’s most famous hikes, the Besseggen Ridge, for sweeping views across the region. The valley also boasts some excellent rock climbing routes and the newly opened Synshorn Via Ferrata overlooking the Bygdin and Vinstre lakes.
In the winter months, families can head to the Beitostølen Ski Centre to enjoy its 12 downhill runs and dedicated children’s area. You can explore the snow-blanketed landscapes during a husky-led sledding safari or on one of the cross-country skiing trails before trying your hand at ice fishing at Vaset Lake.
Getting there
Valdres is around three hours’ drive from Oslo and Oslo Airport while Bergen is five hours away. Having your own vehicle is the best way of accessing the valley and getting around the region.
