About Caotun Township

Sprawling along the Dadu River, Caotun Township is an urban settlement south of Taichung City. Based on population, it is one of the largest townships in Taiwan, with a rugged nature reserve, an interactive museum and a bustling night market among its attractions.

Things to do in Caotun Township

North of Caotun Township is Jiujiufeng, a protected nature reserve dominated by a series of small, jagged peaks. It’s traversed by a two-kilometre-long hiking trail that offers sweeping views across the snaking Dadu River. After your hike, you can admire the works by local artists at the Yu-hsiu Museum of Art, which occupies an award-winning building designed by Liao Wei-li.

Take a step back in time at the Taiwan Times Village, which recreates the life of Hakka, Hoklo and indigenous Taiwanese peoples who were once housed here in community blocks. Wander through the streets adorned with vintage posters and shop signs and test your skills while playing traditional childhood games or learning the art of clay modelling. When it’s time to eat, you can dine on authentic Taiwanese snacks at the nostalgic street stalls.

Alternatively, you can feast on local delicacies at the Caotun Night Market, which overlooks a branch of the Maoluo River. In addition to a diverse range of food stalls, you’ll find clothing, accessories and electronics. Settle in to listen to the live music performances or let the kids loose on the bouncy castle.

Getting around Caotun Township

Caotun Township is around 30 minutes’ drive from the centre of Taichung City and 35 minutes from Taichung International Airport, which has flights to destinations across Asia. Buses connect from Taichung City to the centre of Caotun and travel throughout the township. Renting a car is the most convenient way of getting around the region.
