Glomfjord is an industrial town just north of the Arctic Circle. Surrounded by mountains and set at the end of a fjord, it’s not only scenic but is also one of the most productive towns in Nordland, with water from the Svartisen glacier and Fykanfossen waterfall used to power turbines and generate hydroelectricity.
The Yara Industrial Museum occupies a former aluminium plant and charts Glomfjord’s growth from a small town to an industrial powerhouse. You can learn about how Glomfjord has produced blacksmith tools, industrial instruments and hydroelectricity over the decades. Guided tours are led by former plant workers and offer more information on the town’s fascinating past.
Glomfjord is an ideal base for visiting Svartisen National Park, a wild and untouched reserve where you can discover rugged mountains, shimmering glaciers and emerald-green spruce and birch forests. Hiking trails wind through the park and offer a chance to spot reindeer, Arctic foxes, eagles and wolverines. The crystalline glacier lakes boast some of the best fishing in Nordland.
Getting there
Glomfjord is located in Nordland, just north of the Arctic Circle. The town is a two-hour drive from Bodo and Bodo Airport. Rental cars are the easiest way to visit Glomfjord and explore the Nordland region.
