About Heilbronn

Spreading gracefully along the shores of the Neckar River in northern Germany, Heilbronn is an extension of the Stuttgart metropolis. Bordered by Swabian-Franconian Forest Nature Park and surrounded by picturesque vineyards, Heilbronn is a burgeoning tourist destination in the heart of the Württemberger wine region. More than 500 hectares of the city are covered in a tangle of verdant and crimson vineyards, making it a premier red wine purveyor for the entire country.

On equal footing with wine tasting and vineyard touring, riverboat cruises create idyllic outings for visitors, along with strolling, cycling, skating, dining and drinking along the waterfront promenades. The nearby Neckar park and Experimental Heilbronn science centre provide hours of family fun, while Heilbronn Theatre enriches the night with cultural performances, classical theatre and contemporary musicals. An astronomical clock in the Market Square dates to 1535, with ornate mechanisms instigating hourly chimes accompanied by turning, trumpeting angels and golden rams butting heads on cue.

As part of the Stuttgart public transportation system, Heilbronn is linked by rail to major cities and neighbourhoods via InterCity Express (ICE) trains, and the city itself is serviced by regional trains, trams, buses and the urban-suburban S-Bahn trains. Drivers can use the A6/E50 and A81/E41 motorways to reach Heilbronn, as well as federal roads such as the B27 and B39.

Winegrowing in Heilbronn reportedly stretches back to Roman times, as it has been documented on the Wartberg Hill since 1146. Winegrowers in Heilbronn are often known as "Weingärtners". Small local winemakers and chefs operate Besenwirtschaften, or “broomstick inns”, by hanging brush brooms at entryways to signify temporary wine bars serving small-batch wines and simple, homemade foods.
