Where to stay in Hillsboro

About Hillsboro

Nestled in the Tualatin Valley to the west of Portland, Hillsboro is the seat of Washington County and one of the largest cities in Oregon. It forms part of the Silicon Forest industrial corridor which stretches east towards Beaverton and hosts a large cluster of high-tech companies.

Most of Hillsboro’s commercial and government services are situated around 2nd and 3rd Avenues, including the Washington County Courthouse which dates to 1928 and is fronted by four impressive columns. The Hillsboro Pioneer Cemetery is located west of the city and was established in 1870 as the resting place for politicians and pioneers, together with the McKay Creek Golf Course and Dairy Creek Park. To the east of the city centre is the oldest park in the city, Shute Park, which is home to an aquatic centre and branch of the Hillsboro Public Library, together with a wooden sculpture of Chief Kno-Tah by Peter Wolf Toth that forms part of the “Trail of the Whispering Giants” collection. Shute Park once served as the main hub of community life until the Washington County Fairgrounds were built near the airport to the north. In addition to Intel, other high-tech companies with facilities in Hillsboro include Yahoo!, Epson and Synopsys, as well as being home to the Laika stop-animation studio. It’s long been a centre of wine production, with Oak Knoll Winery, Helvetia Winery & Vineyards and Raptor Ridge among its most prominent cellar doors today, with pinot noir, pinot gris and chardonnay the most popular varietals grown.

Willow Creek and Hillsboro stations are both main hubs for the city’s public transport system which includes both bus and light rail. Hillsboro Airport in the city centre has charter flights across the United States, while Portland International Airport operates regularly scheduled flights around 45 minutes’ drive east.

The Atfalati tribe of the Kalapuya Native Americans lived in the Tualatin Valley for up to 10,000 years prior to European arrival, with the first community settled in 1842. The town grew slowly with the addition of a railroad in the 1870s and later an interurban electric railway, but it was the arrival of high-tech companies in the 1980s that really saw Hillsboro flourish.
