Visit the historic Te Waimate Mission, which details the early encounters between Maori and European people in New Zealand. Wander through the 19th-century period-furnished rooms and learn about the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi, then explore the garden trails to discover what life was like in the original mission village.

Relax at the Ngawha Hot Springs, which offers a series of volcanically heated pools renowned for their therapeutic properties. Bathe in the enticing waters of the Tane Mahuta Pool or step into the dark black waters of the “Bulldog”, then cool off in the milky-white waters of the Cold Pools.

Getting around

Kaikohe is a 1.5-hour drive from Whangarei Airport or just over three hours’ drive from Auckland. The town is small enough to explore on foot, but having your own vehicle is best for accessing the surrounding sights.
