Located just outside the Yamanashi Prefecture, Lake Kawaguchi is the second largest of the famed Five Fuji Lakes and is surrounded by snow-capped peaks, including Mount Fuji. The lake is nestled within Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park and is a popular spot for windsurfing, sport fishing, hikers looking to conquer Mount Fuji and luxury lakeside accommodations.
Exploring the shoreline of Lake Kawaguchi reveals an array of alluring attractions, including the waterside Kawaguchiko Music Forest Museum, where you can see a European-inspired garden, vintage organs and live performances. You can also visit the nearby Kawaguchiko Natural Living Center to capture Mount Fuji vistas and taste delicious ice cream.
Looking for a spot to relax by the water? Head to one of the many parks overlooking the lake, such as Yagizaki Park, Shikkogo Park or Oishi Park. Couples shouldn’t miss the Sakuya Bell of Love, while history lovers can paddle to Unoshima island to see its excavated relics.
Getting there
Lake Kawaguchi is just under two hours’ drive from Tokyo, where you can fly into Haneda Airport. You can also use a combination of trains and buses to get out to the lake, which takes about 2.5 hours.
