Located at the southern end of the Venetian Lagoon, Sottomarina is a bustling beach resort where the River Brenta meets the Adriatic Sea. It is connected to the historic fishing port of Chioggia via a bridge, with the two settlements known as Clodia Minor and Clodia Major in the 7th century.
On the eastern edge of Sottomarina is a wide strip of sand where you can sunbathe and swim during the warmer months. Restaurants and bars line the beach while the waterfront Astoria Village is packed with family-friendly amusement rides and activities. Extending between the beach and the lagoon is a breakwater promenade offering panoramic views.
On the other side of Sottomarina is the town’s historic core, from where you can walk to the island settlement of Chioggia. Wander along its canal-lined alleys to admire the Romanesque-style Torre dell’Orologio S. Andrea or learn about the local marine life at the Museum of Adriatic Zoology Giuseppe Olivi.
Getting there
Sottomarina is around 45 minutes’ drive from Venice and one hour from Venice Marco Polo Airport, which has flights to destinations across Europe and North Africa. Regular buses connect to Sottomarina and the town is compact enough to explore on foot.
