About University of Canterbury

The University of Canterbury in Christchurch, New Zealand is the country’s second-largest university. The university’s main campus in the suburb of Ilam is around five kilometres from the centre of Christchurch. Several notable alumni have attended the university including Olympic champions, writers, politicians, mathematicians and historians.

The university offers degree courses in Arts, Education, Commerce, Engineering, Forestry, Law, Music and much more. Nearby, Christchurch Botanic Gardens offer a tranquil oasis away from the hustle and bustle of the campus. Spread over 21 hectares, the gardens are home to ornate fountains and a variety of exotic and indigenous plants. Closer to the city centre, visitors can enrich their South Island experience by entering Canterbury Museum. The interactive museum displays a treasure trove of relics, collections and exhibits. Visitors can step into a typical 19th century Christchurch Street and wander into old-fashioned shops as horse’s hooves sound on the cobblestones outside. Alternatively, explore the journeys of Scott and Shackleton while visiting the Antarctic displays. University of Canterbury is easy to reach in just under 15 minutes by car from Christchurch city centre. Buses operate from main bus stops throughout the city. Disembark at Clyde Road near the Arts Road entrance or the University stop on Creyke Road. Energetic tourists may enjoy hiring a bicycle, Christchurch city centre has several bike rental outlets. If planning to cycle from the centre, the main university campus is just five kilometres away. Taxi and Uber services are also available.

The University of Canterbury began in 1873 as Canterbury College. The chosen professors arrived from the UK a year after it opened. The university moved to the outskirts of Christchurch as it began to grow and the neo-Gothic buildings of the original college became the new Arts Centre.
