Where to stay in Viborg

About Viborg

In addition to beautiful architecture and fantastic museums and cultural attractions, Viborg is a great base for exploring Central Jutland. The city is anchored by a handsome twin-towered cathedral and boasts some of the best-preserved 16th-century townhouses in Denmark. Venture out of the city to discover ancient burial grounds and Viking settlements.

Things to do

Viborg Domkirke dates back to the 1100s and is one of the oldest and most enchanting cathedrals in Denmark. Most of the cathedral was rebuilt from granite in the 19th century, including the soaring twin towers. Acclaimed artist Joakim Skovgaard was enlisted to paint the colourful frescoes.

Learn more about the life and legacy of Joakim Skovgaard at Skovgaard Museet. Small but engaging, the museum occupies the former town hall and features original paintings by Skovgaard, as well as masterpieces by his family members. Rotating exhibits showcase works by Danish Golden Age artists such as Johan Thomas Lundbye, Constantin Hansen and Lorenz Frølich.

Sankt Mogens Gade is the oldest neighbourhood in Viborg and is home to some of the city’s best-preserved historic houses. Many date back to the 16th century and feature historic plaques, including gems like Den Hauchske Gård and Den Gamle Præstegård. Others have been imagined as atmospheric cafes and B&Bs.

Stretch your legs and spend the day exploring Central Jutland. The Hærvejen, also known as the Ancient Road, winds down the peninsula and takes you through lush oak forests and past centuries-old Viking burial grounds. Mønsted Limestone Mines is a popular family attraction, with tours taking you deep into the subterranean tunnels and caverns.

Getting around

Viborg is pedestrian-friendly and easy to get around on foot while local buses are a fast and affordable way to get around the city. Trains run between Viborg and Aarhus in around one hour. Rental cars offer the freedom to explore Central Jutland at your own pace. Copenhagen Airport is a 3.5-hour drive away.
