The Heritage-listed Flemington Racecourse is famous for hosting the Melbourne Cup every November since 1861. It’s the oldest and most cherished continually operating horse racing course in Australia. An average of 25 races occur throughout each season, most of which are open to the public.
Horses are celebrities at Flemington, with fans converging by the thousands for every event. While you’re there, stroll the landscaped gardens and keep an eye out for memorials to legendary horses, such as Phar Lap, the “Red Terror” who gave hope to the country throughout the Great Depression years. Arrive early for drinks or a meal at Headquarters Tavern, located near the racecourse train station.
High fashion reigns at Flemington, particularly at designer fashion shows and events during the week-long Melbourne Cup Carnival. Throughout the year, you can join walking tours and explore the Flemington Heritage Centre to view collections and artefacts from the club’s racing history.
Getting there
Trains, trams and buses offer plenty of options for reaching Flemington Racecourse. On race days, special trains go directly to the racecourse. On regular days, you can walk from Newmarket Station in about 10 minutes or take a tram to Flemington Drive.
