Opening its doors as a grand picture palace back in 1929, Regent Theatre is a Heritage-listed landmark in the heart of Melbourne’s East End Theatre District. It has survived a fire and flood as well as threats of demolition before it was beautifully refurbished and now hosts some of the world’s most popular theatrical productions.
Step inside the main theatre to admire the lavish rococo interior, which is decorated with original chandeliers, bespoke furnishings and plush seats. It’s here that blockbuster stage productions, such as “The Lion King” and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Love Never Dies”, are regularly showcased.
Musical concerts are often held in the opulent Plaza Ballroom downstairs, while private event spaces include the lavish Regent Theatre Suites and the Regal Promenade, which features a coffered barrel-vaulted ceiling and mirrored wall. Combine your visit to the Regent Theatre with a stop at the Melbourne Town Hall, a stately 19th-century landmark topped by Prince Alfred's Tower.
Getting there
The Regent Theatre is a short walk from Flinders Street Railway Station and easily accessed by trams that stop near its entrance. Melbourne Tullamarine International Airport is 35 minutes’ drive north.
