The Heritage-listed Hwaseong Fortress features high ramparts offering impressive city views of Suwon. It was built in the 1970s by King Jeongjo in tribute to his father Prince Sao and boasts fortress walls extending nearly six kilometers around the old city.
You can explore the centuries-old settlement enclosed by walls, then visit the king’s palace Haenggung and walk through the towering Paldalmun Gate. Marvel at the tall wooden pavilion at the entrance, where you can appreciate the craftsmanship in its beautiful stonemasonry and carvings.
Join a walking tour or on the tourist trolley for an audio guide and deeper insight into the history of the site. Admire the innovative military designs on the massive walls, in addition to bastions, watchtowers and artillery towers. You can follow the walking route up to the hillsides to capture stunning views over Suwon.
Getting there
Located in the heart of Suwon, Hwaseong Fortress is two hours from Incheon International Airport. Once you arrive, you can enter the castle via its main gates and purchase tickets at the visitor center.
